@joe bartels
I hope they don't decide to cull hikers, too.

I hope there is not a big outcry against this proposal. The beefalo are non-native and are not even pure-bred plains bison. In the area of Powell Plateau/Kaibab Plateau are other large animals such as mule deer competing for food.

I imagine, however, that many people will think they are going to actually SEE the hunters! I'm picturing the television news media sensationalizing this fear, showing tourists with small children viewing the Canyon at Mather Point. A stern and sad male voice of "authority" is doing a voice-over about horrible, evil hunters who want to kill poor defenseless bison, and then the film segues into frowning men wearing camouflage and face paint, brandishing large rifles.

I also think Jim_H should take up hunting since he loves to eat bison steaks. ;)

I can assure you that if you get yourself in a position to hunt one, with all the gear, license, tag, etc., you will be spending a heck of a lot more than $25 a pound.

Why would I do that? It's $25 a pound, or was, at the Whole Foods in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The nicer one, across from the rail park near to the Plaza and REI. We had it here, but as of my last time in them, the Whole Foods in Tucson stopped carrying any bison aside from ground. Sprouts has it 3 times a year, and the price is better, but, still.
