I thought I'd throw an idea out on the table
maybe we could combine the map & compass event with another that's been requested
how about...
the 1st Annual HAZ BBQ
I'm thinkin' South Mountain, Papago(but it closes at dusk) or Piestewa(the other side which is more of a park)
or wherever is good for orienteering & a BBQ
mid July Saturday, starts late afternoon with map & compass then the masses join for one hum dinger of a BBQ
might need more guides than just Matt if there's a lot of folks

Good idea Joe. Papago would be best for me,as I am very familiar with the area, are you sure about the park closing at dusk? I see people out pas dark all the time, of course they may be scofflaws. If there is a big turnout we would definately need more guides, I think I can only handle 10-15 of you at a time.
I'm really glad to see so much support for this, thanks guys.

Well come to think of it maybe I'm not thinking of the same area. When I think of Papago I think of away from the zoo by McDowell road. But yeah, maybe the real park area on the flip side is open.
though I doubt BBQ'ing anywhere is allowed, it'd have to be a catered BBQ
anybody up for jumping in as the organizer, may need a couple
a late Saturday afternoon, I can definitely be there!

Papago
Sounds like a wonderful idea to include the catered BBQ, I'll help out with whatever is needed.matt gilbert wrote:Good idea Joe. Maybe we can get a HAZ group site going so we can narrow down when it is, where, who is attending, what we will bring, etc.
THANKS SON errrr MATT!!!

I will find out about papago park proper and let you know when it closes. You are correct about the mountainous part closing after dusk though. M&C instruction will probably only take about an hour to an hour and a half. I don't plan on getting into the complicated procedures, just what you need to know where you are and where you are going.
Im almost positive that there are BBQs there, we'd just need to bring the charcoal and meat (and beer, and ...).
You can toss me in as an organizer too,
you can never have too many things to do right?

Yeah that sounds pretty cool
Once you find out about Papago or wherever I'd suggest opening up a Group Hike on the main page(even though it's not a hike) just to give us an idea of who all is interested in attending
that'll make you the orginizer and you can set your "mother"
as the leader
better keep the "b" word on the down-low
I have more friends than you can imagine that will all the sudden be hiking enthusiast if they catch word of "beer in a park"

There is also a dog park at papago, so those of you with dogs (marlee) can feel free to bring your four footed friends.
I've noticed all the group hikes have limits on the participants, is there a way to make a group hike without a size limit, or should I just make it high?
what I meant by beer was potato salad.

Let's get the date set up and we can work from there.joe bartels wrote:Yeah that sounds pretty cool![]()

Do we need to reserve a place? Or will someone get there early
to make sure we have plenty of space?
I'll be happy to bring some German Potato Salad

along with extra stuff.
Thanks guys, this is great!

OK I have an email pending with the city of Tempe. Hopefully I will hear back from them tomorrow. They should let me know how to go about putting in the appropriate permits.
I went down to the park today and there are picnic tables and BBQs but part of the park is under construction. Hopefully they will be done by the 12th, (I asked about that in the email as well). If everything is in order then there will even be a small playground for kids (if you want to bring them instead of the dogs).

Map and Compass instruction
What sort of class are you all expecting? The question has been posed to me and I thought I'd leave it to the group. I find I use a basic set of principles and those were what I was planning on covering, is everyone expecting (or wanting) something more in-depth. I'm happy to accomidate, I just don't want to overload anyone or give more than you wanted to know.

Re: Map and Compass instruction
If it's hands on, how will you go about this? Should we bring a compass and map? I'd like it to be a bit in-depth too.matt gilbert wrote:What sort of class are you all expecting? So far, sounds like in-depth. In that case we (those interested in the map instruction) should meet earlier, somewhere indoors where its nice and cool, and go over map and compass use in-depth and then go out in the field and apply the skills. This would mean 2-3 hours (at least) in the "classroom" and then an hour or two in the field. If possible it might be nice to do this over two days (meet friday evening for classwork then do a review and field work on sat afternoon). Everyone would need their own compass, standard baseplate model with adjustable face (one can be had at walmart for around ten bucks). Whatever map we use will probably be provided, if not I'll let you know what to get at a later date.
If anyone is interested in assisting with teaching please PM me as soon as possible. Those interested in teaching will need to meet beforehand to finalize the curriculum. I am looking for a student-teacher ratio of 5:1. So really, if you have map and compass skills let me know.
Those not interested in the M&C course are of course still welcome to attend the BBQ, they just would not have to be there until later.
