When I hiked the east end of Aravaipa back in May, I was a bit put out by the amount of pebbles getting between my sandals and feet. Not only a pain in the foot, but pumpkin as well. So, I need a recommendation on footware that is best for preventing pebble infiltration ...

Salomon Tech Amphibians have sort of a mesh that prevents that - they work great.

first, no scandals, We found that trail runners w/ 2 pair of socks seemed to work pretty well.

My husband swears by his Salomon Tech Amphibians. I just wear a pair of old, trashed low-cut hikers.
Always with wool socks, of course.

And they keep the rocks / pebbles out? I don't mind getting wet -- I waded the Gila River -- it's the pebbles betwee my foot & shoe that drive me up a walll ...

I've been wearing Teva's with neoprene sandal socks this year. They've worked out very well in West Clear Creek and West Fork. Aravaipa is a pebble beast, though. They helped by adding a little padding but I would try something else next time.

Always with wool socks, of course.

This works best in my experiences, keeps the pebbles from creeping in on the sides. Nothing seems perfect. Sandals are torture without neoprene. I tried wool on the outside of neoprene to keep the pebbles from creeping in. Better but prefer trail runners.

@Tough_Boots Teva's and neoprene worked good for us when we last visited the Aravaipa pebble-beast by leaving the sandals a bit loose and just swishing the pebbles out on a regular basis.

Although I haven't done much wet creek hiking lately, my 6" RedHead waterproof boots have worked fine.
