Arizona Movies
Apologies to the moderators if there is already a forum thread... I looked but this site is ridiculously huge.
Recently came across a 1983 tv movie Kenny Rogers As the Gambler Part II - The Adventure Continues
There is a bunch of Sedona & Superstition ( Apacheland? ) scenery. Several different locations in Sedona are recognisable. Even if you don't hike much there is one scene right beside Cathedral/Bell Rock. Also a scene in Ponderosa near a small lake. Not sure, maybe [ Prime and Vail Lakes ]
What really caught my attention was a scene I think they filmed in Weekes Wash. I wouldn't think they could get a permit for that but it sure looked familiar. [ Weekes Wash ]

And much more too. For example, when Genghis Khan totally ravaged the Oshman's Sporting Goods ... that was all filmed at Metrocenter. Back when that was the only real mall in the valley (having dethroned the outdated Christown).SpiderLegs wrote:Circle K where Bill & Ted were teleported
In fact Metrocenter still looked exactly the same as it did in the movie until a makeover in the early 90s. It's unrecognizable today.

Re: Arizona Movies
Funny movie, The Guilt Trip (2012), with Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogan has a Grand Canyon scene but filmed in studio with obvious backdrop stand-in for the Canyon. It's funny anyway. I can't find the scene on YouTube, but here is a parody of it, and it WAS filmed at the Canyon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NY1LPzyUZY

He's referring to what was more of an art film, or short film. It had a very specific, uh, audience. Definitely was not in theaters. VHS, DVD, that sort of thing, today, primarily downloads.Jason Cleghorn wrote:Was it called, Ignorance?Dave1 wrote:I think there was a movie filmed on Camelback last year.

Re: Arizona Movies
My favorite though not a movie and I try to watch it if I'm home on Saturday at 2PM: THE HIGH CHAPARRAL. I get the biggest kick out of it when I hear things like bringing cattle down from Reavis, etc.
http://www.thehighchap...

They also covered some of the characters of the day including Johnny Ringo. If you read a little about the actors and such, they loved making this series. Also if you watch it, there is a whole lot of sweat going on due to the temperatures of the area.Geography of Southern Arizona and The High Chaparral
Siting a fictional setting in an actual time and place requires some degree of creative license. Still, The High Chaparral gave us the most realistic setting of any television Western before or since. It was largely true to the Arizona Territory of the 1870's. Many of the geographic sites referred to or visited were real places - Tucson, Tombstone, Tubac, Nogales, Fort Bowie, Oracle, Sonora, and more. Other sites were clearly the fictional invention of the story writers and their supposed locations are open to speculation. To aid in that speculation we offer these geographic resources. http://www.thehighchap...
Just Where Was The High Chaparral?
We know that the series was filmed at Old Tucson, just outside of Tucson, Arizona. In most of the episodes, the ranch was supposed to be about 30 miles from Tucson. In "The Peacemaker" in the first season we got to see a sketched map of its location. Below that is an actual map of Southern Arizona in 1895. Just south of Tucson you can see the Mission San Xavier del Bac, the site used to film Rancho Montoya, which in the series, of course, was supposed to be in Sonora, Mexico.
For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

Hey now, don't forget about Valley West Mall, hung on strong until that Arrowhead place opened up with nothing but orange trees around it. And why in the heck has nobody mentioned Eight Legged Freaks? Also filmed in Valley West Mall right before it was demolished.SpiderLegs wrote:The Ziggy Piggy where Napoleon was pigging out on ice cream is the Chuckie Cheese on 35th & Northern.chumley wrote:And much more too. Re: Arizona Movies
Raising Arizona:
The "Unpainted Arizona" store was the Home Depot at Country Club and Southern in Mesa (I think). The "starter home in suburban Tempe" was filmed in the Shea Blvd area just west of Fountain Hills (when it was still open desert!). Randal Tex Cobb's motorcycle scene were he shoots a lizard off of a rock was filmed on the road to Peralta Trailhead.
Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure:
The water park scene (Waterloo?) was filmed at Golfland in Mesa (recognize the blue tube water slides). The bowling alley scene was filmed at Rural and Hwy 60 in Tempe. I've always referred to it as "Bill and Teds Most Excellent Bowling Alley". My mom was on a bowling league there, and I spent a lot of time in that alley as a kid.
The Getaway (1994)-Kim Bassinger, etc:
A chase scene was filmed behind Whiskey Row in Prescott, and a highway scene was filmed on 89A on the north side of Prescott Valley.
Just a few drops in the bucket...

I can't believe I forgot to mention "Billy Jack"! Besides the obvious Hapkido scene at Courthouse Square, the Corvette scene was filmed at Lynx Lake. (Shameless plug: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxiOTUHQ-s4 )

Evolution from 2001 was filmed in Page. It was an Ivan Reitman comedy that was a redo of the Ghostbusters formula. Dan Akroyd had a cameo as the Arizona Governor.

Gotta represent the Tucson area with these 80's classics:
Can't Buy Me Love (1987) Teen movie filmed at Tucson High School, just south of U of A. Great opening shot with the Catalinas in the background and scenes at the Airplane Graveyard and the Tucson Mall: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_bNuLJxBdU
Revenge of the Nerds (1984) Filmed on and around the U of A campus: http://movielocationsandmore.blogspot.c ... -1984.html

Re: Arizona Movies
Used to work with a guy who was an extra during the dance scene in Can't Buy Me Love. We gave him a lot of grief that his horrible dances moves are recorded on film forever. Dated a few girls from Tucson High back in the 80's. If I look really close I can see them too when I re-watch the movie.sirena wrote:Gotta represent the Tucson area with these 80's classics:
