GPS repair

Post by Tough_Boots »

The rubber over the antenna on my 60csx has worn through near the tip. There is now an exposed part. I'm not sure how much it matters but I'd rather keep water and dirt out of there. I had some electrical tape around it last weekend but that messed with the signal much more than expected. I was thinking about using a small piece from my air mattress repair kit and seeing if that would do the trick. Anyone have better ideas or solutions? Maybe something a bit more permanent?

Good leads... plasti-dip may be too thick. But this might work since I could really limit how much gets used: http://www.lowes.com/p...

I emailed Garmin and here's the rather unhelpful response I received

Unfortunately we no longer have parts for this unit, nor do we service it. You can use the unit until it stops working or falls apart, or you would need to replace the unit.

See if you can get your hands on some shrink tubing from an electrical repair shop or electrical store. Last time I contacted Garmin for repair, I got the same kind of results.... What ever happened to "Customer Service"???

Having had to do so for work many times, you can send in GPS units to Garmin for "repair," if the unit is registered on your Garmin account (you can register it right before sending in). Anyway, what they really do is say, oh we don't make that unit anymore and pull back stock from some warehouse and send it to you. You pay something like $100, but that's cheaper than buying a new unit.

That said, these other ideas are way better to just keep the old unit working. Let us know what works.

They already told me they don't service that unit anymore since its discontinued. I put a dab of liquid electrical tape on it and I'll see how long that lasts-- seems like good stuff so far. The unit still works just as well as when it was new. There's probably a reason there is still demand for that model.

Yeah, they don't actually repair the units, regardless if they still make them. It is cheaper to them to just throw it away and give you another. The units I have sent in are not made anymore either.

Glad to hear your fix is holding up - something to keep in mind if I get a unit back with that type of damage. Usually, we get "Oh, I shut it in the vehicle tailgate and cracked the screen and/or tore off the buttons." Sigh
