Bobcat sighting

Post by big_load »

I couldn't get pics while I was driving, but I got a great look at a bobcat driving back out from Haunted Canyon on FR287. It was up near the mine tailings, bouncing along on the shoulder just ahead of me going uphill.

I've seen a few bobcats in the wild before, but never out in the open like that.

It is not at all unusual for me to see one in my backyard; I stepped out my back door a couple of nights ago and one was next to my barbecue grill.

@DixieFlyer
I'm guessing you live N or E of downtown PHX? I've heard that bobcats are more common that way. In SE valley where I live (Ahwatukee) coyotes and javelina are common and I have seen a fox on my back wall but I've never seen or heard of bobcats around here. I'm curious if anyone has ever compiled maps of "wildlife density" for the area - they'd be interesting to look at.

Even though they're not uncommon, bobcats back home are about the hardest critters to see except porcupines.

I've been lucky enough to see a few over the years while hiking and driving in the wild. They're typically running away. I caught this one off guard at 15 yards and was actually able to click off a couple photos. It took him a few seconds to figure out what I was. A very cool moment that I haven't forgot. They're special animals. [ photo ]

I've seen at least a dozen bobcats (one in Minnesota) but only have photos of two...
#1: July 2012 while four-wheeling in the Samurai near Rawhide Canyon: Mama bobcat bounding away
#2: September 2017 next to AZ 288 by the bridge over the Salt River:

I'm in NW Tucson and have seen 1-2 month since moving here over the summer. Saw one while out walking the dogs in my neighborhood and it had a mouthful of bird and leaving behind a trail of feathers.

I've seen 11 bobcats so far. All in AZ. I've seen more bobcats than raccoon here.

I think that error can only happen when you try to embed an image. You can attach an image (as you did above) by selecting the Attachments tab below, and clicking the Add files button.
