Post by jeremy77777 »

Does anybody know if Canyon creek has been re-opened since the Rodeo fire?

In response to jeremy77777's reply:

I'm not entirely sure of your question, but I did a VOAz project there a couple weeks ago, the fish hatchery is open, the camp ground is open, and we didn't see any closure signs. This Canyon Creek is south of the 260 a few miles, east of Payson.

I didn't think that Canyon Creek was close enough to the Rodeo Fire to be affected.

Anyway, the area is open. I've read many fishing reports for Canyon Creek this summer. Sounds like a great creek!

Canyon Creek and Valentine Ridge campground were closed a year before the rodeo fire. I spent one day hiking the creek and surrounding meadows back in '98-99. Seems the trail runs for 5 or so miles. Trout in there too.

The camp ground is fine. The area around it is standing black pine stumps, the surface vegetation is coming back strong. We were chopping and grubbing out thistles to prevent them from over running the place. I didn't realize there is a trail down along the stream. We walked over east to the next drainage, forget the name, nice little jaunt after supper.

actually Shawn its quite a nice stroll. Very easy and the trail and surrounding meadow meanders for 5 miles from the Valentine camp's fisherman trail to the San Carlos? reservation boundary. May be the Apache res. Anywhoo, trail info can be found in the book "streamside trails" which I no longer own. :x
