South Mountain mystery trail

Post by Nan »

On National Trail, just west of Telegraph Pass, there's a spot where the trail forks. The LH trail is unmarked but appears to be an established trail along the southern ridgeline, paralleling National which follows the northern ridgeline. Anyone know the name of this trail? Does it join up with National again further on? I don't see it on the Park's official map online.

I think you are referring to a trail that takes off at the red crosshair in this map

It goes to that peak then follows the ridgeline down switching back at the lower end. I think it's a trail-of-use by the locals unless it's a decomishened trail from 20+ years ago?

I've seen recent trail work on that route. It does indeed go out to the peak, where there is a large cairn, then down the ridge on what was a use route. The trial work is evident and quite recent. It appears that this route will be improved and connect with the Desert Classic which comes on out this way. It's possible that this is not official trail work; I say that because the route is not well designed. Some of it drops straight down the fall line, a serious no-no in trail design.

@Joe, yes, that looks like the spot where it branches off.
