Will be staying (first trip here) near Portal in early March and looking for trails in the Cave Creek area. The trails on the Hike Arizona site appear to be all in the Monument.
Also, is the Pinery Road from the east open and OK for passenger cars through to the monument?
Any tips appreciated. Thnx

Re: trails on the Portal side of Chiracauas
South Fork of Cave Creek #243 & Snowshed & Greenhouse Loop are popular from that side. You can look at the "Nearby Hikes" section (under the US Map, mid right) on either of those pages to see what else is listed on site in the area. You can also click on that US map and it will populate what is near. To make it even easier, here it is http://hikearizona.com/location_g.php?ZTN=848&ZL=8 You can switch the map from "Street" view to "Terrain" view to get a better idea what the area looks like.

You need that Rainbow Expeditions map, available in Tucson at Tucson Map and Flag. It has all the trails in the Chiricahuas in red. Maybe you can find it on the internet, also.

Re: trails on the Portal side of Chiracauas
Snowshed trail was cleared of logs in April 2010 by USFS crew, 412 by count; Greenhouse also cleared (24 logs) so Snowshed-Crest-Greenhouse loop is open for business. Likely still logs on the Crest trail.

They also sell it at Summit Hut, and they'll ship it to you...azbackpackr wrote:You need that Rainbow Expeditions map, available in Tucson at Tucson Map and Flag. It has all the trails in the Chiricahuas in red. Maybe you can find it on the internet, also.
