Advice regarding King's Canyon/ Sequoia (CA)

Post by paulhubbard »

I know, I know, I should be hiking in AZ, but this is a vacation planning thing, where it's not so hot in August. We're looking to go to the King's Canyon area around Sequoia Nat Park to setup a base camp and do some hiking and motorcyle touring around the area. Wondering if anyone here has advice on: Must See - Must Hike - Stay Here - Stay Away - Not Worth It - Too Crowded, etc... We're looking at the Sunset campground, so if anyone has words of wisdom or experiences there too that you'd like to share?

Thanks!
Paul

Oh, well, that's the west side, right? I was going to say, that on the east side, from Lone Pine, you can motor up a paved road to a nice campground called Horseshoe Meadows, which is above 10,000 feet. There are several trails leading leading out of that campground, which actually do lead into Kings Canyon, but not the popular part of it.

Just went up there this month and was BLOWN AWAY! Fantastic area. I highly recommend the Onion Valley Camp Ground above Independence. Twin waterfalls, tons of hiking...including this jem:
