The Brown Bag Challenge!
I have an idea...and I think it's from watching to many of these survival TV shows on Discovery. But bare with me....
A short overnighter (3-5 miles) where the only form of backpack you can bring is a brown grocery bag (modified with duct tape if necessary to make sure it stays in once piece).
I am thinking of trying this out when it's still slightly warm out...so maybe early Sept. I figure you can get 5 or 6 lbs in that bag without it falling apart...maybe more if you use lots of duct tape...but that might be called cheating when it's all said and done.
Anybody intersted? Time to go UBER LIGHT!

That's what I'm TALKING ABOUT! I know someone is adventurous enough to sign up for the Brown Bag Challenge...from here on to be referred to as The BBC.
Come on....it'll be fun....I think.

Re: The Brown Bag Challenge!
Sounds like an excellent idea!
I did something similar years ago while a scout ( but the bag was denim...) . I often wonder why I carry so much stuff when backpacking (especially when slogging uphill in the heat!). I built my own shelter, found my own food & water and managed to survive several days just fine.
Wish it didn't take so long to get out your way...

Re: The Brown Bag Challenge!
I figure the basics can still be fit in that bag. A sleeping bag, some food, a fire starter, water bottle...a beer. you know the essential basics.

Topo doesn't have choices...he is absolutely attending! My wife won't let me leave without him. Apparently he acts up when I am gone. The dog is an angel when I am home...so I think she is lying. Either way, he's in.

Re: The Brown Bag Challenge!
I've lugged a rock saw and pail with supplies 5 miles up a canyon - paper bag should be easy. Where exactly are you thinking?

Re: The Brown Bag Challenge!
I haven't gotten that far. So destination is open...what do you guys think?
My requirements...someplace with water, and a fire ring. Distance doesn't matter much to me.

Re: The Brown Bag Challenge!
I like the idea of simplicity... but would prefer a simple denim bag to hold the only really necessary item: a nice sleeping bag. I used to enjoy three day treks sans food enjoying the simple comfort of that bag to pass a comfortable night. Best adventure was a cross country trek, off trail, climbing Sierra Blanca back in the 80's... a nice November hike that fortunately missed the snow storms. I caught hell from the local SAR group when they heard about the hike (... I hitch hiked back to town along the road from the ski area and unfortunately got picked up by one of them... ) so, there is an issue of perceived safety to consider... but, that was maybe one of my best hiking outings ever. Go for it!

Re: The Brown Bag Challenge!
Throw a few things into a rolled up wool blanket, tie off the ends with some 550 cord and throw over you shoulder... hell ya, sounds like a blast. Just like in Stand By Me. Could rig up a paper bag like a small pack with duct tape. I see a project in the very near future.
