Car camping near Sedona
I'm doing a weekend in Sedona with a small group (~5 total) and am curious if anyone knows of good car camping options near the Dogie, Mooney, or Casner Mtn trailheads or off of 525C. We are looking to stay in areas open to camping w/ a campfire. If anyone knows of a fire pit already in place somewhat near the road, it would be greatly appreciated. =)

No Red Rocks Pass required for parking in areas without specific improvements, just at Trailheads.

Re: Car camping near Sedona
My last time up there we camped about 2 miles (or maybe just less than 2 miles) before the Dogie T/H on the south side of the road among some junipers - there is an existing firering there.
This is before you head up & down the last switchback, at about the 4600' line on your topo.

'No fees for areas without improvements' has always been in the original 'Fee Demo' verbiage - It's nice to see that the gub'ment is finally obeying their own rules ... even if it took someone with a few cajones to force them to. The arrogance of our forest SERVICE never ceases to amaze me.Jim_H wrote:No Red Rocks Pass required for parking in areas without specific improvements, just at Trailheads.

Re: Car camping near Sedona
Well, since when was buying Sedona firetrucks a trail improvement that can be justified as being paid for by the fees collected through the Red Rocks Pass?

There are a lot great spots along 525C. We camped less than a mile away from Robbers Roost with a fire ring and a some good views. Just check out a couple fo the side (9XXX) roads about 2-4 miles before you hit the Casner Mtn Rd entrance.

Re: Car camping near Sedona
I'm not sure how close it is to the area you specified but there's camping along Schnebly hill rd road, the view is pretty amazing along there but I recommend a 4WD vehicle for the road.

Re: Car camping near Sedona
We ended up camping on 525C about .8 miles before the TH. There are lots of fire rings set up out along that road, and we only saw a few other campers out there. Some of the road going up is high clearance only, but there are still good spots before that.
Camped up on Schnebly the second night (thanks for the suggestion Kelli!), but we got there so late that we couldn't find actual camp spots. Slept in our cars instead. Lots of camping up there, but everything that isn't a camp spot is boulder field.
Did not need a Red Rocks pass for anything all weekend.
