Sharing non-trail photos

Post by montezumawell »

Your trail photos belong here on HAZ. If you have trail photos to share, please put them here. Some members may also wish to share non-trail photos, such as pics of their dog, Spot, and other such personal pics. We recommend sharing such photos via Yahoo. This topic provides a brief description of using Yahoo and a magical freeware program called 'Irfanview32.'

As formerly free Internet services move toward fee-based sites, it is getting a tad more difficult to find reliable and still free photo hosting for all of your wonderful friends/pets/campsite digital pictures. As of Spring 2002, Yahoo is still offering a fine free photo hosting service. Of course, you will need a Yahoo ID but they are easy to obtain. Once you have registered an ID, you may use the hosting service. Click on 'Photos' and follow the easy instructions. You should create new and separate albums for pictures you wish to share with others. We suggest you title each album acording to the topic of your pictures so that your albums do not become cluttered with a ga-zillion extraneous pictures. For example, if you take a hiking trip with your dog, Spot, an want to showcase Spot, create an album called 'Spot' or whatever.

Then upload and title and describe each picture according to your desires/whims/etc. Then click on 'Share photos' and check the appropriate boxes. You simply give out one address and visitors can see the albums to which they have been given 'public' access. When they open one of your albums, they see tiny thumbnails of each of your pictures and they can then click on any thumbnail to get a larger version. The thumbnails load very fast and the thumbs covert to the larger images quickly, too.

Please do all of us a favor, though, and don't make your images too big. We have a very slow dialup connection which often runs in the 28.8 kbs range. Imagine the frustration of waiting for big pictures to load!
(If you don't know how to downsize your pictures, please read posts below about the magical freeware program 'Irfanview.')

We are certain there are other easy-to-use and still-free services of this ilk so we hope other HAZ members take the time to identify them and give a little bit of description about how to use them. We're sure we will all learn something in the process. Good luck.

:P If I had trail related photos I believe I'd put them on HAZ. Everything is backed up on two seperate servers. Currently, we're only running at 4% capacity. When it fills up I'll make it happen as always.

Over the past couple months I've been researching several options to enhance the photosets (Photo Galleries) on HAZ.

When finished (approx. May-June) members will be able to...
 Select thumbnail size and photo size on the fly. This is in addition to a standard setting they select in their profile. 14.4ker's to Broadband will all be accommodated.

 Members will have the oportunity to label each photo. Futher down the road they will be able to edit those labels. This opens up the oportunity to search labels!

 Mike lead me in the right direction on how to tackle this project. I can only do a little bit on it each week. I currently have numerous projects going on right now.

Joe, how do I get to the photo gallery on HAZ? It is probably right in front of me but I don't see it.

Joe knows I can't seem to re-size my digital photos as I have to ask him to do it when I post my pictures here.

I've read the book, changed some settings but my pictures are all huge. I then go to my different photo software and still haven't been able to figure out how to make them a reasonalbe size. I know thats why they take so long to upload or view.

All in all, I've enjoyed my digital camera but its been a bit aggrevating.

Re: Sharing non-trail photos
NOTE: The topic and post below were drafted after reading a comment in another topic regarding 'outdoor pics.' We should have entitled this topic: 'Sharing NON-Trail photos,' because your trail photos belong here on HAZ. Pics of your dog, Spot, and other such personal pics can easily be shared via Yahoo. Hope that helps clarify this topic. J&S in RR
Thanks for the clarification.

AZScrapper:

There is a freeware program called irfanview that should help you resize and even touch up your photos... Then you can save it as a jpeg

Throw it into google and download it. I use it all the time... Its a nice little app.

Great suggestion Cakewalk! I just downloaded it and I'm going to check it out tomorrow night. It's cheaper than PhotoShop, for sure!!

The link to get it is... ( dead link removed )

Let's hear it for Irfanview!

Post by montezumawell »

Three cheers for Irfanview and THANKS! to Cakewalk for bringing up the subject. We totally forgot to mention our favorite program. We started using Irfanview 2.0 back in February of 1996, shortly after the initial version 1.70 was introduced by a then-Bosnia-student, Irfan Skiljan. We think Irfanview is the coolest graphic program available. Primarily because it can do so much; it's free and it used to fit on a single floppy disk. We just checked this laptop and the current version we use is 3.02, introduced in July 1999. He is now up to version 3.61. Years ago we started carrying around two floppies of Irfanview. One in case we had to reload and one to pass along to friends. It's the first program we load onto 'new' computers. Most people we talk to about Irfanview are skeptical because it is so small and it's free. But once they start using the magical program, it quickly becomes their 'goto' graphics converter/processor. I guess we're going to have to get 3.61 but we are so happy with 3.02 it's hard to imagine how we could be any happier.
If you haven't already tried the 'slideshow' feature, check that out. Awesome. Batch convert/resize is cool, too. We use the thumbnail feature a lot, especially since you can quickly create HTML pages with all the proper 'href' links and file titles.
If you have time and inclination, go to http://www.irfanview.com and read a little bit about the creator. You'll get a real chuckle about his comments on some of his fans' behaviors. (Maybe that will happen to Joe someday!) There are countless places to download Irfanview32 and all the regulars like Tucows, CNet, etc. have it. The easiest way is to simply go to Irfan's website. Well, enjoy and THANKS! Cakewalk for bringing up the subject.

(PS--Forgot to mention something else of interest to the techies: If you go to the main Ifranview website, click on 'What's New' and then you can scroll back through each version all the way to 1.70 to see how this program has evolved.)

Like Mike says, You cant beat the price....

I use it mostly for converting bitmap to jpeg - Like the bryce creations on my website ( Personal plug alert )

Then using the ' sharpen ' option under effects.

Works good also for the digiatal pix that dont come out as clear as you would like.
