Redman Cave
Has anyone been in Redman Cave? I was in there recently and had a couple questions about it. Thanks. -Eric

Re: Redman Cave
upper left hand corner of any page, click the fourth black button "Post" then select "Post Photos"
since Redman or Red Man isn't in the database so you'll need to go with what's called generic naming on the first screen
If anyone knows the coordinates I'll add it. Anyone is welcome to add description pages too, yet explaining that is more involved.

Re: Redman Cave
I would request these coordinates not be public. Do what you will. Think of Peppersauce and Government caves. Do the need for the many to see outweigh what will happen to the cave. And Redman is not a "pretty" cave, but it doesn't deserve that fate.

Re: Redman Cave
Thats kinda how I felt about posting the location of Redman. Its been hard for me to find the locations of caves around AZ and I think that is what others should have to go through. The locations are out there, but it takes research and sometimes several visits to the area to find the caves. If I know the person I am giving the location to, I am OK with that, but I dont want to be the one to post the location on the World Wide Web.

Re: Redman Cave
ah, I'm not pressing anyone to do anything they don't want
Just don't get caught up in any of those climber/caver/canyonneer circles that lure you in, feed you bologna, then damage other areas to make it appear their secrets are justified. Rampant on FB with high school type peer pressure that sharing is not allowed.

Re: Redman Cave
I would like to think that most the people who visit this website are responsible enough to visit Redman Cave without trashing it. Just don't post the coordinates on YouTwitFace (YouTube-Twitter-FaceBook)
Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement.

It will get posted publicly somewhere someday for all responsible people to enjoy.
I'm not in one of those groups you speak of. I research spots and go there with a friend.
The locations are not secrets and they are posted publicly, but it takes some digging to find them. No pun intended, of course!

Re: Redman Cave
I know this is a pretty old thread but I thought I'd try anyway.
nimrag - I'm an old CAG caver and have done many caves in the area but never checked out Redman. Is it worth even checking out or does it require SCUBA to see anything worthwhile? I heard he one guy died at the sump, but I wasn't sure if this was a side passage they were trying to push or part of the main passage (which I read was only about 250' before you hit water). Thanks for the help.

Re: Redman Cave
There are no old threads. If the topic fits your question, use it. By posting something new, you just push the topic back to the top and it becomes "new" again and people will answer with up to date information. You did exactly right.
Sorry I can't help you on the topic itself, I've only been in a couple of caves my entire life and the "exploring" had already all been done.....

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty & well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out & proclaiming, "Wow What a Ride!"

Re: Redman Cave
I've been in the area very recently. The main passage is rather short, a little crawling, then walking then to the drop and the sump. Air has been bad in a lot of the caves up there with erosion and lots of plant matter in some of the main trunks. The forest service is currently trying to get logging done in there, but the NEPA is flawed and so far a stalemate has been achieved. Now some idiot is marking a mining claim up there but fortunately we have a BLM mining claim contact who is also a caver and he is doing some research as to the viability of the claim.
There are some short passages off the main but most become very small and /or simply go out and back, no loop. These passages are heading mostly toward the surface it seems, so are feeders to the main.
It's not an exciting cave, but in a historical area.

Re: Redman Cave
I have come across another cave, up near Knoll lake. I know the vicinity by studying topos and aerial photos, just haven't been up there to explore it, yet.

Re: Redman Cave
Hi All,
My name is Ray Keeler and I am in the Central Arizona Grotto, a caving club in Phoenix.
I know this thread was in the 2010-2011 time frame, but wanted to let those interested know the status of the cave.
Redman Cave has a seasonal closure from March 1st through October 31st for the bat maternity colony. They are Fringed Myotis bats. We are helping the Forest Service with putting on and taking of the gate each year.
Redman Cave is open from November through February and the gate is removed during that time. Please enjoy going to the cave during that time frame. For the summer months AZ Game and Fish, and Tonto National Forest have decided to give the mother bats a safe place to raise their young. Redman is on national forest land. The White Mountain Apache Tribe Land begins to the east by about 1/4 mile. It is the north/south fence.
The gate was not on in 2010 when the first post was made.
The cave gate is currently on. The cave gate will be removed again in October. If any of you would like to come and help it will be a nice day learning about the bats and caves in the area.
I know of only one other gated cave in the area and would be interested if there are others in the area that any you know of. We could discuss this offline if that is preferred. No worries.
Hope this helps. Stay safe.
Ray Keeler
