Garmin Gpsmap 62s

I have question about my new Garmin gpsmap 62s. I added a 4gb micro sd card to my gps. When I connect the USB cable to my pc I see the 4gb card and my Garmin gps. When I added routes to my Garmin gps I can see them on my gps. When I add a route to my micro sd card I cannot see it on my Garmin gps. All routes are *.gpx files.

I’m stuck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

gpx files need to be in a folder called "GPX" inside a folder called "Garmin" on your SD card

so that would be...
/Garmin/GPX

It may be case sensitive. I just tested the above and it worked!

I now use a Garmin 62s and I was not aware we could save routes to our SD Card, but why would we want or need to?

The 62s receiver has 1.8GB of internal memory with the option of either storing multiple routes via the Track Manager screen and/or archiving multiple routes within the Track Manager screen to be later activated as needed. I would think that the SD Card would be best utilized for only downloading maps.

Did they do away with the frustrating limitation on how many could be stored in the internal memory? The 60CS drives me crazy because I have scads of free memory, but I can't save things without moving them because I can only have 10 of something.

Yes they did I'm not sure what the new series units Track Manager memory route limit is but as of this moment I have 21 GPS Routes now showing in my Track Manager memory for active use and 7 GPS Routes in my Archived section of the Track Manager screen. The Archived Routes option was added after your 60CS series. I would need to view the online Garmin User Manual for the 62s (which is probably the same for the Oregon series) to determine what the maximum limit number of saved memory routes and/or archived routes is, it is obviously many more than the older series Garmin eTrex Vista and Garmin 60CS series. Maybe someone else on HAZ knows the new number of route storing limits?

Did Garmin abandon the ludicrous requirement to rename Tracks with more than 500 points before uploading to the device? Anything besides Active Log results in an error message (track truncated or some such...) on the 60xx series.

Yes they did fix these frustrating issues on these new Garmin receiver series (62s,Oregon, and etc..) to market after the older eTrex and 60CSx series.

The other irritating thing it used to do is strip the time information off the track points when you renamed and saved them. That was a sad discovery when I was using one on a field test where the time information was critically important. I still had the active track for one instance, which was enough to avert disaster.

my first hike from the weekend is chopped to 500 points with no time data
really just wanted to geocode my photos

if I remember correctly...
- do not save tracks in old eTrex and it will preserve the time data
- it automatically saves the track, when you turn it off/on it starts a new track

The reason I put a "route" on my SD card was just to be sure I could see it on my GPS. I'm just trying to get use the Garmin gpsmap 62s ... that "manual" is so useful! You are correct that the SD card would be best use for downlaoding maps.

I sent an inquiry to Garmin Product Support regarding the 62x series maximum number of routes that can be stored within the unit's "Track Manager Memory" and "Track Manager Archived" sections. Here is their very comforting response:
The GPSMAP 62s can hold up to a maximum of 200 saved tracks on the device. There is no set limit on the number of archived tracks that it can hold other than the storage capacity of the device, at the most an archived track could be a couple megabytes and the internal memory of the unit is 1.7GB if you haven't installed any additional maps to the unit. When you do archive a track it limits you to only viewing the track on the device and you would not be able to actually navigate using it so I would only recommend archiving them if you are going to need to store over 200 tracks or if you know you won't be using a track until you can connect to a computer to move the track from the archive back into the saved track section.

Even the 60CSx will hold a practically unlimited number of waypoints. What's more, it's not entirely stupid about which ones it lists when you're searching. The 60CS wasn't nearly as sophisticated in that regard.

I asked Garmin Technical Support some additional questions that I did not know the answer to. Here are my questions and their replies:

On my GPSMAP 62s how do I access the memory status for the unit’s available and used “internal memory” and available and used “SD Card memory”?
"If you connect your 62s to your computer it will mount as a drive. If you open the My Computer section of your computer and view the local drives you will see the Garmin and teh SD card listed. from here you will be able to see the available memory of your device and SD card."
On the 60CSx, this memory status is accessible on the unit.

On my GPSMAP 62s what are the various file limitations?
"I have provided a list of the file limitations for the GPSMAP 62 series below for your convenience.
• 2,000 GPX files
• 2,000 waypoints
• 5,000 geocaches
• 200 routes, 250 points per route
• 200 saved tracks
• 2,000 archive tracks*
• 10,000 points per track
