Reavis Ranch 2.0 - No Gimpy Hippies

Post by Hippy »

So, I've decided to revisit Reavis again this year...mainly to tackle Mound Mtn which we were unable to get to last year due to some wild weather! (And possibly due to a "minor" foot injury...)
But also because there were so many of you who weren't able to join us last time and requested a do-over! :)

So here's your chance!
Mark it on your calendars, pack your bag and lace up your boots!

EDIT: changed to first weekend in November!

November 1-3, 2013 (fri, sat, sun)

There will be a visit to Circle stone, Mound Mtn and I'm sure we can come up with some more fun :)

I plan to hike in from the South and am hoping to take over a good chunk of the meadow from that end.

For those of you who haven't experienced this event before, this IS a backpacking trip, you are all responsible for packing in and out your own gear and food etc, there was a reliable water source to filter from last year and I'm pretty sure its permanent, year round so bring your water filter.

It is bear country but we didn't have any problems before.
Depending on which trail you come in from you can expect up to a 9 mile hike in. Check trail descriptions for more info :)

And...if we're lucky, maybe we can once more dine on the best apples known to mankind!! Sooo delicious!

Any questions?

@Hippy Hmmm... is that for Phoenix or Reavis Ranch? NOAA weather for Reavis Ranch is:
Friday = 68
Fri evening = 49
Saturday = 71
Sat evening = 50
Sunday = 64
Edit: @RWStorm... Looks like you beat me by a minute... ;)

@Hippy Some time back I figured that when there isn't a nearby town to select just plug the latitude and longitude in the 'Enter location' box.

When it pops up, the 'current temperature' is the temp at the nearest reporting station so ignore that, but the forecast temps will for for the location you entered.

HAZ Weather Tip:

Choose your hike. View it on the map. (In this case http://hikearizona.com/gps=9392) Pan to center the red crosshair where you will be camping. Right-click to open the pop-up-menu and then click the "Forecast" button. Voilà!

(Take with a grain of salt. As RWStorm notes, valleys will tend to be cooler at night, and other local variances are always possible).

Don't camp in the cold valley. Get up higher in the foothills. If arriving from the north select a campsite near either trail junction to Frog Tanks. If arriving from the south select a campsite after topping out past the switchbacks. There is a saddle there that would be perfect if there is no wind. Whatever, enjoy the weekend Reavis adventure but do be prepared for the cold.

If using a tent take a hot rock or two from around the fire and place them in your tent. This will keep you very warm for about four hours depending on the size of the rock or how many you use.

Hey thanks for that, honestly coolest thing I have been shown in awhile related to hiking...good point though, it obviously will not apply to "micro" climates in the mts..and etc..but its still pretty cool, good for planning.

I use the heck out of that "Forecast" button as well as the "Directions To", and then "Send to Route MGR" to save as a Track for my GPSR. Makes getting to the TH a breeze!

Will be setting up and saving spots for you all. Can't wait! See you all there! :y:

drive safe everyone.
I'm glad the temps have cooperated so I will see you tomorrow. I'll be leaving from North TH around 9 and at my movie :D pace, I hope to be there around 3ish.
For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

You'll have plenty of company... Patrick L and I did an out-and-back day hike yesterday and met everyone approaching from the south. And I mean everyone... HAZers, other hikers & backpackers, deer, hunters and even equestrian hunters, one of whom lost his hat. You'll have to read my triplog to hear the rest of the story about the hat.

Have fun all!

Soooo....for the record...my temps for Canyon Lake were pretty spot on for Reavis. Its funny because I always use Canyon Lake as the nearest landmark when I'm looking up temps in the area and it's usually right on...just lucky I guess. :D

There is also one at Apache Lake you can usually pull data from, but yes those temps held to be pretty true.

Well the sexy weather models might've missed the part about the rain. Canyon Lake, Apache Lake, Reavis Ranch, doesn't matter. Except for not having my rainfly with me it was a nice surprise. And also kept the temperature mild overnight.
