Pusch's Flatiron

Post by SpiderLegs »

Found myself in a debate about the proper name for Pusch's Flatiron after I posted some pics on social media in a local's only group. One person stated I shouldn't call it a flatiron because it would be confused with "THE Flatiron" up in the Superstitions. Another person said it's called Pusch's Saddle, but in my opinion it is not a saddle between two peaks. It indeed looks like a flatiron and should be named as such. Even referenced HAZ and said that here it's been called Pusch's Flatiron for at least a dozen years. To which someone else stated that because HAZ is mostly folks from Phoenix, any naming by people on HAZ is suspect. That same person dug in and said that because Pusch's Flatiron is at the end of Ram's Canyon, the peak should be called Ram's Peak.

Looked on a couple of topo maps and the area does indeed seem to lack a specific name. Any long term Tucson residents know how many years that Pusch's Flatiron has been called that?

Perhaps 2011 as mentioned in the Guide page.

If was widely known as something else before 2011...
- It might fit in the name if it is short enough
- else get a mention on the Guide page

Historically and currently: 17% vs 7% viewers, based on the metro areas. Metro area populations decipher that myth.

AllFails has one posted route where the user named it "Bob's". Another called it LV Lookout. The rest are unnamed. Gaia has zero routes posted. Both have the route marked on their basemaps.

On HAZ, it was named by a hiker who lives in the Tucson area. If this hiking profile is Phoenix-centric, just shake your head and go with whatever they want. It's user-generated content. There is no right answer (but there are plenty of wrong answers). My vote is for 9L Peak.

Pusch is far enough away from Phoenix that there shouldn't be any confusion. "Flatiron" is hardly a unique designation for a chunk of rock, and people elsewhere don't seem confused by it.

Agreed. To this day, when I hear Flatiron, I think of the park near Boulder CO, having visited those flatirons when I was five years old. I’ve never been confused nor bothered by any other rock formations with the same name.
Stop crying and just go do the hike.

Yeah, that's the first place I think of, too. My company has a facility in Westminster, and when I work there, I stay at a hotel in Flatiron Crossing.

That's even closer to home. Not quite close enough, though. Usually when I see it, it's already been a long day and I still have a long walk back to the PATH station and then a long drive home.
