Brick Structure in Monument Canyon
I was just curious if anyone knew what the brick structure at the head of Monument Canyon off Jacob's Crosscut in the Supes was or what it was used for. Was just wondering about that today and was curious if anyone knew or had any guesses.

Re: Brick Structure in Monument Canyon
Interesting. Been meaning to hike up that canyon and have a looksee at the sights. If I were to guess I'd say that was either built by a prospector, or is a really old Spanish smelter. I saw one similar just South of the range, though it was built into the side of a wash.
Maybe that's the Dutchmans "rock house"

Re: Brick Structure in Monument Canyon
Actually the reason I was wondering is because I was reading the book Crooked Mountain and it talks about his house he built near the mine. I dont think this is it. But I do want to go farther into the canyon.
I only went a little way in. I turned around because I saw a Blacktailed Rattlesnake, not because I was scared because I absolutely love snakes but because it was a great way to end a short hike. So when the temps cool down a little I want to head farther in that canyon.

Re: Brick Structure in Monument Canyon
That old Military trail is a great way to go, too bad there's that old abandoned mine site cluttering it up.

Re: Brick Structure in Monument Canyon
yup taken the military trail a few times. Always wondered why it is not a Forest service trail and there is no writeup online.
Great trail but like nonot said the mine sight really gets it cluttered up.

Re: Brick Structure in Monument Canyon
Well I found out that chimney was built in the 1930's and someone used to have a house there/lived there. That's it for now.
