Eagle Crag Trail, CA

Eagle Crag Trail is a 16.2 mile trail located near Warner Springs, California. The trail is part of a network of trails. Not really long enough to take up a weekend, I'm planning to tackle this as a day-hike. Because of it's location, weather may be a factor if attempted too late in the year. If there are any CA hikers (or AZ visitors...), I'm heading out on Saturday, June 26, 2010. Early start is best...

Is that the one that is the tallest peak in San Diego County, just a bit taller than Cuyamaca Peak? Or is that one called Eagle Peak, and it is on that Indian Reservation? I know it's near Warner Springs.

Think you're referring to Eagle Peak but I'm not certain. I didn't see where this trail complex was on Indian land but it's hard to tell in this area... Lots of Indian property scattered all over. We do have to play Forestry games (permits, etc.)

On a side note: Am I the only So Cal member of this site!? I was hoping to flush out one of two other enlightened members with this invite. Filling in all the blank Hike Descriptions is a daunting task for one guy (not that I won't try...).

I saw one on here the other day, can't remember his name. Maybe someone else will remember? And then, on ABC there is Andrea Z. She leads a bunch of interesting-looking trips out there, most notably kayaking in the Channel Islands.

Now that I've gotten used to the format on HAZ, I've got to say the CA sites I've encountered, to date, SUCK!! (really working for HAZ member of the month aren't I?) I'll keep trying, though...

Have you looked at ABC, though? That is the Arizona Backpacking Club Meetup group. For whatever reason, this Andrea Z, who lives in San Diego, does participate, and leads trips out there.

I really enjoyed the Sierra Club when I lived there. They did a lot of backpacking trips to off-the-beaten-track places. Can't understand why they went and changed the name of Guyman Lodge, their cabin at Mt. Laguna. Can't remember what they are calling it now. I guess whoever Guyman was, he no longer rates... Maybe it wasn't PC to call the cabin Guy Man Lodge?

I like visiting there, but doubt I could get used to seeing other people on "my" trails. I have a friend who lives in Yuma and volunteers on a Mt. Laguna trail crew. (The closest pine trees to Yuma are at Mt. Laguna). Anyway, she is appalled by the number of mtn. bikers up there, and how much trash they throw--they behave like ATVers in Arizona. Also, they don't observe other trail etiquette, she said. No real surprise there, but the trash surprises me, I guess.

When I was a kid we used to go to Mt. Laguna, mostly in the spring and fall, and there were never very many people around. It is a two-hour drive from town, and most people didn't even know about it.

Better than Girly Man Lodge...

These days, it's hard to go anywhere in So Cal without seeing vast hordes of humanity. And I agree about the mtn. bikers; my theory is they ride bikes because their too lazy to hike (maybe I'm being cynical - hard to tell anymore...)

I'll check out ABC and see if I can track down the other CA resident...

Have you got data showing how many of them translate into HAZ members? I wasn't kidding when I said most of the CA hiking sites I've encountered are garbage... They really don't compare to this site (in a favorable way...)!
