Quartz Peak Trail - Sierra Estrella, AZ :: Drive - 4WD?

I am planning a hike to Quartz Mountain on the 15th. Can you tell me about the drive in? I've read that a passenger car can make it in, but also sandy conditions require a high clearance four wheel drive? My group has hikers in early 70's as well as a 75 year old woman who will make the hike. I've seen the comment to bring lots of water which is mandatory this time of year. I hope I can get a response before we make the trip.
