| no partners | | Started to Coon Springs trailhead and didn't like the weather report or the looks of the clouds. New hiking partner asked me if I'd been to Rogers Canyon and that he had seen pictures and wanted to do the hike. I agreed and we turned off towards Queen Valley figuring anything on FR203 could be a problem with rain looming in the distance. The trail was wet and had some damage from the recent rains. The stream the trail follows was roaring compared to previous visits. The hike would have been pretty uneventful had I not suggested bush wacking to a cave I had seen previously that seemed to have a granary or some dwellings in it. This idea made last weeks slog to the Sierra Ancha Treasure seem like a walk. It added .8 of a mile to the hike through thorns, brush with thorns, cactus with thorns and no way around. I got to the base of the cave (with torn shirt and pants)which was about 50 feet straight above me with what appeared to be hand holds worn into the stone, but not worth risking. I secured my dog and I followed the cliff band around bouldered up and found myself with my hiking partner above the cave. We worked our way around terraces of rock down to the level of the cave and low and behold a granary and some remnants of another building in the cave along with a fire ring made of salvaged stones from that previous building. I worked my way back down got my dog and followed a thorny vegetation strewn wash back down to the main trail carrying my dog through the thorns. Tied my dog went to the dwellings and came back and ate lunch to the sound of rushing water on a rock near a small waterfall. Great Day! |
