I took an invite last minute to go up to the rim with Bob. Bob is an awesome friend but an avid non-hiker. Bob wanted to camp but his family planned to fish WC Lake then turn around a go home (Heresy in my mind). Instead of jockying for the biggest trout under 12in on a crowded lake in a tiny boat, I had him drop me off below the rim so I could hike up to their whereabouts later. I had packed and planned to continue all the way to the lake after starting at the See Canyon trailhead, but I found out in Payson, that 4hrs for them constituted a full weekend away and they'd be done at noon. Less miles and more creek dallying for me then.
I started around 7:30 and added See spring into my spur s'ploring.
I refilled my water Nappa Spring and chilled in the shade on some mossy rocks.
My kudos go to the first mile of the trail and the last. The first offers the bubbling creek and the top is a lusher forest than I had pictured. The trail was in pretty good shape. Where the Chevrons weren't, cairns appeared. Saw an elk and then saw two people contemplating hiking down but gave up due to the steepness.
Bob appeared about 20min after I reached the top. I had begun hiking towards BCL, but he called out on the 2-way and I returned to the meet.
We drove around a good bit the rest of the day. I added some miles by hiking the grassy Gentry Canyon. I'd recommend doing this if you're nearby. You're almost sure to see elk as so many game trails come in and out.
We camped at an ok spot (as far as drive ups go) with no neighbors thankfully.
The next day we drove a little more. I hiked to the sink near WCL and then led him out by taking the Young HWY with a stop at Workman Creek Falls and a dip in all of its radioactive glory. I can already feel it working.
