After allowing this trip to languish on my wish list for a couple of years, Jesska and I finally made it out there Thursday.

I'm happy to report that this place (unlike some others we've visited ie: Bell Trail) was well worth the long drive and hot, miserable hike in (just after noon) and out (around 5pm). Yes, Salome creek/canyon is a waterey slice of paradise!

We got lucky and hit on perfect water levels for our first visit - the falls and waterslides (super fun) were flowing, and the pools were deep and free of scum. We took our time splashing thru and enjoying the place. About halfway thru we were passed by three young guys, and at the top of the rappel we met three more. Kind of surprised to see 3 or 4 of them with wetsuits ... c'mon guys, the water's not that cold!

Okay, about the rappel ... I made the sketchy traverse out to the second rap station, but didn't like it at all. There was too much junk (ropes, biners) cluttering up the anchor, and no place to rig comfortably so I went back and decided to use the first set of bolts closer to the falls. That's when three guys arrived and started debating about what to do - they weren't quite prepared for how technical it is, and at least one of them had never rapped before. They only had a 60 ft rope so we offered to let them use our 100 footer, which barely reached (doubled) down the fall. They were still seriously considering turning and heading back upstream, but after they saw Jess go first, they decided to go for it. I joined her at the bottom (fun ride), and we waited for the boys to make their way down.

By the way - the water in the jug was plenty deep enough to just jump off the ledge, if you're crazy like that!

After the last two long, cold swims the canyon came to an abrupt end and we all made it out safe and happy - a great day! I'd have to say that this is my secong favorite technical canyon so far, a close second to Christopher Creek. I'd like to do it again real soon - anyone want to go Wed. or Thur. in the next week or two?
