WHY did I do this?
Midlife crisis?
Thanatos?
Who knows?
What an amazing hike!
Getting up to the ridgeline was a little tricky, but once I'd crossed the connecting spur to the battleship proper, things went from the sort of thrill provided by an amusement park roller coaster to the kind of barf-inducing terror associated with Russian roulette.
I'm pretty sure one section of my ascent was just plain wrong, because it was highly exposed and required climbing a vertical section of the same type of rock that had already broken off in my hands at earlier points along the journey. If something had gone slightly awry here, that would be game-set-match. I didn't feel good at all after I'd completed this move, but rather, that I had done something violently dangerous. I'd spent an insane amount of time scouting around for a better way but couldn't find one.
Ultimately made the summit and the return trip, though arduously long, was pleasant. Just to finally be OFF that accursed ridgeline gave me such a new lease on life!
As to the rest, others have said it, and much better than I. The views are utterly spectacular. I didn't see a blessed soul the entire day in this vast, lonely, timeless expanse. |
