| no partners | | Took my second run at Battleship Mountain on a crisp clear Friday. Thankfully the primary lot had plenty of space (unlike the weekends when its packed). Made record time out to the Boulder Creek and then rock hopped most of the way to what seemed like a reasonable way up the first mountain. I missed any defined path on the ascent (did find one on the way down though), with only a few scratches and thankfully no run in with snakes. After lunch on a nice flat rock near the top, I tried to find the way up to the peak. After some head scratching, I climbed some brittle rock which would have put me in a world of pain if it would have broken. Thankfully no broken rock, or bones! The top was flat with great views. I gave some serious thought about continuing on to the actual battleship, but from my perspective I could not see a good way to get there and it was already after three - so rather than tempt fate, I headed back. After nine miles my usual pains in my back, knees and ankles kicked in, - no record setting on the return. Made it back to the car around five thirty with a pack of scouts in the lot ready to begin an overnight. Though I did not make it to my end goal (I'll get it next time), had a great time on a great hike. |
