I arrived at the trailhead about 6:20 or so and started hiking within ten minutes. It was 6:32(I checked my GPS) when I realized it was going to be warm today. I hiked up the trail and thought about my game plan. I decided I'd go off-trail up to Peeley. I went up a drainage which had some grey water in it...caused by the water passing thru some burnt trees. I went up Peeley and then descended towards the north side. I followed the old fence line for a while and then hit the ridgeline. My plan was to take my time and try to stay on the 6,400 contour. I was pretty much able to follow the contour but a few times I was forced to go higher or lower. I tried to determine the way Joe would have gone. The route I took ended up being very enjoyable. I also made sure that I didn't do any climbing that I considered was higher then class 2 or easy class 3 and that route does exist. Unlike my last, which was mostly class 4 climbs. I reached the Sheep summit and looked at the register. Up to this point, it was an easy hike and search.
I decided because I had time I'd descend a ravine. The first 1/4 mile or so getting to the ravine wasn't bad. After that....it was brutal. Last week, catsclaw was evil. This week catsclaw was welcomed and sought after and plentiful in areas. The manzanita and holly and other assorted brush was very taxing on my body. Unfortunately, once again no clues but I'll be out there again tomorrow. |
