| no partners | | I set out to take my first look at Rough-N-Ready Canyon, but exited highway 88 too early and ended up at the Bulldog OHV area. I arrived at 4:45am and it was still dark outside. I knew I wasn't in the right place, but decided to park and walk around where I was at. I don't know if this OHV area was recently closed. It looks like a fire burnt through the area a year or so ago. The parking lot is accessible, but once you are in, it is surrounded by barricades and a locked gate, so forget enjoying this area in your off road vehicle. A sign at the trailhead says a permit is required to access the area in a motor vehicle. A small walk-thru area allows hikers or mountain bikers to pass through.
I followed the road that leaves the parking lot to the east. This road travels primarily north for about 2.5 miles before turning down a wash towards the east. After reviewing my route on Google Earth, I noticed that this wash dumps right into the Rough-N-Ready Canyon, so a loop hike could easily be accomplished using this route as a start or finish.
I enjoy the solitude this time of morning. Watching night turn to day is a special time to hike. The prickly pear fruit blossom was substantial. If you were into making cactus candy or jelly, this area would be the motherlode for collecting your fruit.
When the road turned East towards the wash, I followed it for another 500 feet or so and then turned around. Next time I will come back with my mountain bike and see how much further I can explore in the limited time that I have before going to work.
The actual Rough-N-Ready trail will have to wait until I explore this route first. |

This is my gym. I have to travel down a bumpy road to get there. There are no treadmillls, no machines, and no personal trainers. I walk..I run..I breathe the fresh air. I can go any time I want, as much as I want and there is no membership fee. |
