| partners | | Bob invited me to do a Moon/Meteor shower hike with him and Bobbi from South Kaibab to Bright Angel. It sounded great but there was one in my book that I wanted to tackle while in the area. The Tonto from Grandview to South Kaibab is the second hike in book and has been on my radar. Bob was super cool and accommodating and agreed to hike it with me and arranged for us to meet Bobbi at the South Kaibab Tonto Trail junction.
We set out a tad before 10am and worked our way down the steep descent to Horseshoe Mesa. Then down Cottonwood Creek Drainage to the Tonto. From here we turned West and followed the long and lonely trail. Grapevine Drainage is in fact as long of a side skirt as most write-ups describe. We were a little concerned about the heat as it is middle of August and there is little if no water on the trail. We were in luck however as there was cloud cover most of the way. We arrived at South Kaibab a little before 7. We were supposed to meet Bobbi there at 9 so Bob made a nice bed on the rocks and hard dirt to take a quick nap. I set out to explore a bit down the South Kaibab. I didn't go far and then headed back up. I was just in time to see one of the most amazing sunsets EVER! We placed a call to Bobbi to let her know we were early but got voice mail. All of a sudden around 8pm we hear footsteps. I shout out Bobbi? Yes she replies! Yes! She is early! On we go across the Tonto to Indian Gardens where I think anyone of us could have easily spent hours. We rested a bit, watered up and then back up Bright Angel we went. As great as it was to have the cloud cover all day it was a bit if a bummer at this point. It blocked the full moon most of the way and I didn't see any of the meteor shower.
This was a long one and a huge thanks goes out to Bob for both Driving and for Hiking this one with me. A big thanks goes out to Bobbi as well for setting up the hike in the first place and for being so very cool! I enjoyed it mucho! |
