| no partners | | After doing the Loop with Bob in the dark I wanted to go up from the Lonely Dell Ranch at Lees Ferry and look to see where you would cross and go up or down (depending on the direction of the loop). I parked my car and followed the trail by the river upstream. Looking all along the way at what we had done the night before was really an eye opener.
Anyway I had to cross the river 4 times before getting to the spot where you turn and start heading up. I decided to go ahead and do it since I was going to do it today anyway. Basically you go up a break in the cliffs where there is a large slide of debris from the mines. It isn't difficult but the sand and rocks are loose so caution must be taken. At the top of the first section was a nice big cairn so I knew I was in the right spot. I continued on and found a faint trail. Once I got up to the sand bench the trail disappeared and then reappeared a couple times. It's funny how much easier it was to find my way with the help of the sun. I saw several deer prints in the sand and what I believe may be that of a mountain lion. Once at the top of the Pass I started working my way up and over the many ridges. I couldn't help but think did we really just do this last night in the dark?
The one thing we really missed out on the night before were all the incredible views from up there. Once back at the Spencer Trail I made my way down to the boat loading area and then walked the road back to the Lonely Dell Ranch where my car was parked. This hike is tough in spots but extremely rewarding! One I will do again someday for sure! |
