| no partners | | As I was hiking yesterday I was thinking back to my first hike in AZ about 10 yrs ago. I read (somewhere) that the way to get to the top of Superstition Mtn was to hike to Fremont Saddle then take a left. Of course that didn't turn out so well - we struggled up past the Hoodoos and started down the other side. At some point my 13yr old daughter got stuck good by a cactus and we retreated.
Well it was very different this time as I tramped around the same area. I went armed with a great hike description, several pithy and entertaining triplogs as well as an excellent GPS track (thanks Grasshopper) - thank you HAZ!
This is a fun trip combining the right mix of scenery and adventure. After West Boulder Saddle it's essentially an off-trail trip - plenty of cairns but its easy to go wrong. Particularly for the solo hiker the GPS track really takes the route-finding pressure off.
The Roost area itself is pretty big with a lot of levels...I'm not sure I saw all of it. I hadn't really expected the next part (Roost to Fremont Saddle) to be so interesting. It's just a short hike up the hill to the top where Weaver's Needle comes into view then its a fun traverse on an incipient trail that parallels the Peralta Trail, just a bit higher. The only piece of advice I'd give is to stay high/level - don't get trapped into angling down prematurely.
No doubt continuing down the Cave Trail is an excellent way to get back to the car, but the shadows were getting long so I just headed down the Peralta Trail to the Lost Gold Mine Trailhead. Very enjoyable.... |
