I weaved my way around & through pretty much the entire grounds starting with the very nice little water park section that has a couple of small duck/fishing ponds, ramadas & shade trees. I then looped the dozen or so baseball/softball fields with most of them full running little league baseball games. Then I ended with a loop around the actual fair grounds with the fun part being a lap right down the middle & around the 1 mile horse race track, I managed to cross the finish line first in that one man race
The city had made a lot of improvements & additions since my last visit and I was very impressed with the overall look of the grounds and will not wait 8 years to do this again!
On the drive home, I stopped at Discovery Park and did the short hike down to the pond to check on the owls. Found the 2 young owls in their usual cottonwood tree and then continued around the pond and back out. Pulled out of the parking area and 50 yards down the road I drove right over a very small Gila Monster (between the tires). Pulled over and got a couple pics of this first monster sighting of the year. This one looked like he had not long ago emerged from the egg and was the smallest one I have ever seen, approx 6-7 inches long. Cool ending to the evening! |
