I was amazed at how lush and green it was on the Brown's Trail. There were gambel oak thickets everywhere. I saw alot of locust bushes, and even a bracken fern. It was quite windy at Brown's Saddle, but it was nice, as it was warm, and it kept the bugs at bay. Our campsite was just big enough for our two tents. That night I took some photos of Brown's Peak with stars, backlit by a full moon. On Sunday we climbed Brown's Peak, then headed back on the Amethyst Trail. The area that the Amethyst Trail passes through isn't recovering as well as on the Brown's Trail. Few trees growing back, mostly just manzanita brush. Upon reaching the Four Peak's Trail, we left the burned area for the most part. We followed the Four Peaks Trail back to Lone Pine Trailhead, through some nice stands of ponderosa pines. It must have been amazing to see Four Peaks before the Lone Fire of 1996. There are huge ponderosa logs and douglas fir skeletons everywhere, where as now the only trees growing back are gambel oaks. Had a great time. |
