| no partners | | Left work around 6 and needed to do something. Didn't want to do an out n back, so I took the bus to the next town (Rodley) with plans to hike back. Good thing it doesn't get dark until after 10 around here. I need to live at a higher latitude.
The Liverpool to Leeds canal is probably thousands of years old. I don't know. There are historical mileage markers to keep you in check. There are plenty of canal boats along the way (basically England's floating trailer park). Some of the path is paved, most of it is nice gravel. Lots of people out running and biking. Not many hikers. Unlike Scottsdale, no obnoxious bikers or people who pissed me off. No gross dudes without shirts either. Maybe just cause it was a little chilly.
There are probably 10 locks along the route. Nice to see this cool old technology. Manually operated. I could open and close them on my own (though I didn't). There were a handful of bridge crossings, also hand operated swing bridges to let the boats pass. Just get out and push!
Not knowing anything about the place, I found myself getting a little uneasy as the canal got closer to the city center. Increased graffiti, barbed wire fences, etc. And it was getting dark. Then I smelled a strong skunk odor. Poor guy must have sprayed after being frightened by the two blokes laughing under the bridge! I stopped to say hi, since the last time something like this happened I used the opposite approach and got shot at. But Piers says there are no guns in England.
About a mile out it started to rain. I threw on my gear and made it back into the city, where I was pleased to see the canal ended a few hundred yards from the Tapped Brew Co, where I had a surprisingly tasty american pale ale. Two more stops and the rain let up before I was able to walk back to the dorm. (I don't just pretend I'm still in college ... I live the part!).
The canal was 6.91 miles. To and from campus and dinner rounded out the rest of the mileage.
Here's some more info on the canal. Maps, photos, history, etc. : http://www.towpathtreks.co.uk/LLC/index.html |
