| partners | | So after putting Pine Mountain in the log we headed over to Tule Mesa. We then beat our brains out on the road again and arrived at our hiking point for the quick 1/2 mile to the top of Tule.
Once we arrived on top we had to make it quick I had 2 things running against me. The storm and the clock. The storm being the more pressing of the 2. The other has to do with GMT. Amateur Radio uses UTC or GMT so the date changes at 5pm local. We arrived at the summit at 4:50 pm. Why is this a problem you ask? Well I am trying to hit the 1000 point mark by activating all my summits unique and if I start this activation before 5 pm local and continue past 5 pm local it will count 2 times and my unique stat is gone. To date I have activated 51 unique summits about to be 52. So what's the big deal wait till its 501 and start calling for contacts. Good plan except a monster thunderstorm is bearing down on us. So I began the quickest and shortest qualifying Arizona W7A SOTA association activation began calling CQ on 40m CW at 4:56 local and ended at 4:58 local making the 4 required contacts and then with Hanks help quickly broke down the station and ran off the peak with the rain thunder and wind knocking at our heals. We made it back to the jeep just in time for the heavy rain to start.
Another peak in the log and 401 activator points on the board only 599 more to go.
Later that night I got an e-mail from my friend Pete who is also the W7A SOTA association manager telling me he thinks my 2 min qualify activation is a record He is one of the contacts I made on 40m and is also the only other person to activate Tule Mesa. |
