A park volunteer told me a year ago, impounded water had to be drained within 36 hours. Today, at about 6 p.m. and only 15 hours or so after the deluge, all water beneath the north dam was gone. Only a large expanse of muddy silt was left as evidence. That, and a bath-tub ring, leaving me to estimate the water reached about 15' deep at the dam before receding.
The largest evidence of the rain occurred in the first quartermile out from the VC. The wildlife pond was backed up 50 yards in places and so deep on the trail at the first large arroyo that I had to detour to the south about 15 yards to find a crossing. A 6-10 inch deep scar cut through the trail a few yards farther west where water had slashed through. For bikers it was a different kind of trail. To the west, the landscape was shaved in two places by the run-off, leaving only the most sturdy-rooted plants in place. But, all in all, the effects on the inner basin was less than I imagined. |
