What an awesome and challenging canyon this place is. Right from the start this place requires one to be on your A-game. The amount of exposure and areas where you have to pre-think where your next step is going to be is simply amazing. With that said the Salt Canyon is not a place for beginners or people with extreme fear of heights. There was a group of four people that was at the LCR the day before we arrived on saturday morning who told us they took 17 HOURS to get down mainly because the girl with them was having panic episodes on the really steep traverses.....when this guy told us that I was just amazed somehow they made it down.
Our group started our hike down at 8:30AM and made it to the river in just 4:17 hr/mins. We set up camp on a beach nearby and explored the area after lunch, found the springs with the nasty salt water then later on we decided to go swimming in the chocolate milk waters of the LCR...yes they water could have been blue but had a sweet time either way. In the middle of the night the LCR decided to rise and some people had to move where they had set up camp due to the rising waters.
The following morning short on water we started to make our way back at 8AM in search of our water cache half way up. A little while later we came across the other group of backpackers, and were making their climb up very slowly (again because of the girl's fear of heights) we chatted with them for a minute and kept going. About an hour later we made it to our water cache and it was a godsend as i was almost out of my water. Had some GORP and chilled for about 30 minutes before continuing making our up and try to beat the sun, at some point i got into a nice rythmn and quickly made it back up the trailhead in 3:50 hrs/mins. On our way back we stopped for lunch at the Cameron trading post and i rewarded myself with a tasty Navajo taco. Later monday afternoon we learned the group of slow hikers spent another night in the canyon and took 24 HOURS to make it out :scared: and i asked myself just how one takes that much time, without much water and most likely no food left. I am glad they made it out safe.
