| partners | | Lee had ambitious plans for Veterans Day, and I had told him I would hike whatever he came up with. In the end, things got scaled back from a couple of 10-12 hour adventures into a shorter day trip up Flatiron. I wouldn't let him get away with just the Flatiron, and I was able to convince him to hit the Reverse on the way down.
Since he had never to Flatiron before, I decided Siphon Draw had to be experienced on the ascent, and we hauled pumpkin up to avoid the early holiday crowds, including one very entitled young woman who decided that screaming at us was a good way to handle a tough situation. All I could think of was four dashes.
A bit farther up we passed a guy and two girls and as I climbed up, the guy says to me "This may sound awkward, but you have very impressive calves" I , told him he wasn't the first to say so, said 'thank you', and kept going.
Up top in under 1:25 we took a quick break to take in the views on the Flatiron and chat with some HAZ lurkers before ditching them and the holiday tourists and heading for 5024 where we spotted a beautiful panther while enjoying a snack.
From there we headed down toward Massacre Falls using the routes previously posted on HAZ. It was very steep and there was some loose scree along the way, but it was a fun route and we were happy not to be returning in Siphon Draw. Once we hit the Massacre Trail, our pace picked up and eventually we cut west, taking an adventurous off-trail route toward the Crosscut trail and back to Mining Camp.
Along the way, we witnessed the rarest of rare sights on the trail, and Lee also found some sweet pottery . Even I was impressed since it was much more than just a pile of rocks!

On a serious note, I'd like to express my gratitude to all of those who have served our country. On HAZ I know of FOTG, BiFrost, Kingsnake, AZ Wandering Bear, AHOTE, Flying_Fliver, hikerdw, SuperstitionGuy, Jason Cleghorn, CannondaleKid, Azbackpackr's son (and I'm sure others I'm not aware of) who have personally sacrificed for the rest of us. This holiday is just one day for recognition of their service but one I personally appreciate every single day of the year. Thank you all very much. |
