| no partners | | I had another hike planned with friends from work, but the others were not able to go today. I went back to sleep, hoping to avoid some of the chill on this fine morning. I hit the trail at 9:10. I attempted this hike a few weeks ago but didn't have the legs for it that day. I felt much better on the hike today, but as I write this triplog, I am stiff all over. This is a tough hike!
When I reached the top, I turned south and followed the hoodoos for a short distance before heading west and connecting with the ridgeline trail. I wanted to take in some views of the canyons along the bend in the ridgeline trail. I then hit peak 5024 for some more views before dropping down to the Flatiron.
The sky was clear and beautiful. A couple of days of brisk winds made for great visibility. Gusting winds on top of the mountain brought the temps down quite a bit. I saw a few purple faces on the Flatiron. The usual gaggle of people sitting around enjoying the views was replaced with a steady stream of people hurrying to the edge for a quick peak before scurrying back down. I didn't stay long either, just enough time for a snack before heading down.
Prior to arriving at the Flatiron, I didn't see anyone on this hike. The chilling winds didn't stop anyone from hitting the Siphon Draw trail, though. It was thick as usual.
I arrived home with about an hour to spare before heading to the Phoenix Zoo to see the lights with my wife and some friends. Talk about cold and windy. Brrr! But it was fun. Rhonda and I ended the night with a ride on the Merry Go Round while our friends giggled on the sidelines. They were just jealous! |
