| no partners | | I ventured out into a new area (for me) with a plan to just walk around and see what I could see. If you haven't been out that way it's really nice open desert but with quite a few passable roads (dirt and paved), many cultivated fields, and a surprising number of pricey-looking residences. But hit the Ironwood Forest National Monument boundary and it's mainly just the nice desert.
I've spent a lot of time finding petroglyphs and ruins 4 or 5 miles to the SE, much nearer the Santa Cruz River, but I had no idea whether today's area, the southern foothills of the Sawtooth Range, would be "good fishing" or not.
It almost didn't matter. Enjoyable walking through the sandy (!) desert and up the low basalt covered knobs. I didn't see anyone out there but there are various tracks and some signs of migrant passage. The Sawtooth Range just to the north looks impressive. And I did find some cultural signs...not a lot, but some petroglyphs on two of the lower hillocks and some pottery pieces. I'll probably go back.... |
