The cultural hunt was a bit of a bust...saw only a few scattered pottery sherds and the sole petroglyph I saw was modernish. A few interesting things though: I ran across a weather balloon data package, ascended a steep seldom visited bump, and had a fun and challenging time on Wildcat Peak.
I would call the route I took up Wildcat the "curly ridge" because from the place I first saw the summit I had to do a near 360° circle on a long narrow ridge to reach it. It was nice to be up there although the view was limited by the overcast. At one point I spooked a couple javelinas a couple hundred feet below me and they did an impressive sprint straight down the steep mountainside. A bit further along I ran across some hidden (and fresh) garbage - a likely drug spotter site (where's Outlander when you need him?).
The summit itself seemed more popular than I would have expected though recent visits were mainly by geo-cachers and religious nuts. Not sure how most people get to the top - my guess would be they strain up the steep southern face (my descent route) - I doubt many take the "curly ridge".
Another good day in this area and not my last (it's only an hour from my house!). |
