We strategically planed this hike after a heavy rain. Outside of monsoon season this was our biggest rainfall of the year. Previous reviews said the waterfall was a trickle at times. So we wanted to see the waterfall when it was really cool to look at. We got what we ask for. The drive up there was amazing. The cliff walls had half a dozen waterfalls pouring off them. There was water everywhere!
We had no problems other than mud on our long hike to the creek.
We got to the base of the hike where the creek bed was supposed to be. It was a freaking river. The three of us strategically planned to cross the river by throwing gear across, stepping on a few boulders and using team work to grab hands and pull each other across. After a 20 minutes we managed to cross. We soon discovered the path went along the creek bed (river) back and forth roughly (12 times). We were determined to get to the waterfall after hiking so far. So we tried to make our way up stream without crossing the river again. This took us through thick brush and climbing alongside the river on a mountain side. It did not feel very safe. We came to a spot where we could go no further. We had to cross again, and this time there were no rocks to step across. The water was just below waist deep, and was moving fast. We were able to hang on and cross as the current wasn't strong enough to pull us downstream as long as we had a hold of something (a tree, a rock, a friend, anything). Once we got the hang of weighting through the water we were able to make our way up river to the falls. We arrived at the falls and our expectations were exceeded. The falls were creating such force we couldn't get close to it without our skin burning from the spray. It was massive. Our hands and legs were cold from the river crossing and falls as we made our way back. The climb back up the mountain was brutal. Our gear was wet and we probably weighed an extra 10 pounds. By the time we got back to the trail head we were exhausted. This one was all I could handle. |
