We'd never hiked the ever so popular Horton Trail so it was the objective for day 2 of our camping trip to Zane Grey country. Woke early and made a hearty breakfast, tidied up camp so the ravens wouldn't destroy everything before we returned and hit made for the trailhead which conveniently was located in our campground.

First quarter mile or so of Horton is dry now, going underground to eventually join Tonto Creek. But soon it turns lush as the babbling brook runs over the sandstone ledges in seemingly endless little waterfalls. This being mid-week we had the trail and the creek pretty much to ourselves. We bumped into and chatted with one Canadian couple who were also staying in the same campground and only passed two other couples. Going upstream is slow, mostly because of all the opportunities to ooh and ahh and attempt to take photos semi worthy of the place.

Checked out the numerous camp sites along the way, one which was very elaborate. May need to backpack this some day. Birds were singing everywhere. A large group of Albert's Squirrels ran dashed across the creek via a log bridge just in front of us, hardly paying us any mind.

The spring is a wonderful place. We tarried there a bit and had a light snack. My hiking partner decided to turn back to camp from there, and I went eat on the Highline to Derricks and down.

Hiking out of Horton east on the Highline is a bit more of a climb than I had anticipated, but pretty enough. Derrick offers lots of Alligator Junipers, one of my favorite Arizona trees. The north fork of Derrick brought me right into our camp. All in all, a very enjoyable first trip on this loop.
