| no partners | | I have been looking at Sinks in the Holbrook Anticline on Google Earth for a couple of years and located some NW of Snowflake at an area called The Sinks. This area is 6 miles North of SR 277 on Rocking Chair Ranch Rd. This road is Private Property No Trespassing, Sheriff Patrolled. There is a sign off of 277 stating this and providing phone numbers for the area ranches. We called and got permission from a very nice but at first cautious and then helpful rancher. There are a couple of dozen sinks in this area, but as the rancher pointed out, 300 in the whole Holbrook Anticline. They are known as Evaporite Karst. Karst, or sink hole topography occurs when acid ground water disolves limestone strata creating shallow caves which later collapse to the surface. Aerial photos since 1953 of the area show that some sink holes are getting bigger and new ones are forming. These pretty much are near the Dry Lake area 10 miles to the NW. These sink holes show up on our GPS and made it kinda of fun to go wandering about in a giant minefield. Really a pretty cool wide open area and we had nice temps and a cloud overcast. |
