We usually do the Weatherford trail this time of year as a preview to our fitness for an annual rim-to-rim at the end of September. We decided to mix things up a bit this time and started from the Inner Basin TH instead. Along with my wife and three of our kids, my brother and sister joined in on the fun. Lockett Meadow campground was fairly full, but I was surprised that the trail was so empty on a Labor Day weekend. We had the aspen grove and the inner basin to ourselves. Came across maybe 2 or 3 other groups on the trail before the end of the Weatherford Trail, where it joins the summit trail at the saddle. From there on, the "traffic" was more like what I expected (busy). The hike was not only impressive because of the usual views, but the weather put on quite a show as well. With a "mostly sunny" forecast and 20% chance of rain in the late afternoon, the Peaks shook things up quite a bit. It was sunny to partly-cloudy from the start through the inner basin, though we could see the clouds blowing fast and furious over the tops of Agassiz and the Hump. As we crossed over the treeline, clouds would sometimes enshroud the trail and then blow over to sunny skies again. By the time we reached the terminus of the Weatherford, the clouds got a little thicker and it seemed a storm was moving in. Just as we were beginning our descent from the summit, the rain/hail descended and the wind howled. It made for an adventurous trip back to the saddle. The moisture on the mountain really made all of the color in the rocks and foliage vibrant. Once we crossed over to the east side of Agassiz, the wind died down. We continued to alternate between hiking in the clouds and some drizzly rain until we reached the turn off to the inner basin from the Weatherford junction. Down in the aspens and as we drove for home, the "mostly sunny" weather showed up again. Topped off the hike with dinner at Freddy's in Flag. Another great day on the Peaks in the book. :y:
