| no partners | | I really enjoyed the little hike from the town of Sapa to the Lao Chai village where the Hmong people lived. I always wanted to check out the picturesque rice terraces in Vietnam and the tribes. They are very fascinating and almost look fake.
Sapa is a beautiful little town that people get away to. There used to be only one way to get there from Hanoi, by an overnight train. But in the last couple of years, they started a bus service/route, which is a lot more comfortable and takes 5.5 hours to get there from Hanoi. It's definitely a lot better way to go!
I wanted to check out the tribes in the nearby villages the day prior to doing Fansipan. So we started walking over toward the Lao Chai village, which was 6 km from Sapa. The map we had showed the road to get there and there was no need or requirement to get a guide. But before we left Sapa, this Hmong woman struck up a conversation with us and just started walking with us. She was very nice. Instead of taking the road, she took us on a trail, which went along the ridgeline and meandered above the rice terraces with much better views (and a lot more mud). We had really nice conversations with her, learning about the area, her family, and her village. We knew that we would have to buy something from her when we got there because that was how they made a living (through tourism), but we didn't mind and really appreciated her company. It was really cool to see the ingenuity of the tribal people in the village. There were even free English classes being advertised and offered in the village since their economy had evolved from purely agricultural to a large part being tourism. Very cool experience and beautiful landscape! |
