The road into Bull Pen is not to my liking, but it is doable in any vehicle, but I'll bet it's nasty after a good rain? There were 4 vehicles at the trailhead but I saw no one until the 4th crossing. 40 degrees to start the hike but it warmed up quickly. Shorts are no problem for this hike, even the semi-off trail portions I did. Once you close in on the 1st crossing many campsites begin to appear. The 2nd crossing comes quickly after the 1st. Then the 3rd crossing and more campsites, especially after. The stretch between crossing 3 and 4 is longer. Look for at least 3 fairly distinct side trails to your left in washes that lead down to the creek before you get to crossing #4. Each will find a really nice campsite or even multiple sites. There are a few campsites at crossing #4. I met a couple from WA state here that were returning back to Bull Pen after an over-nite Friday night. They said they camped 45 minutes down the trail on a ridge. About 45 minutes after crossing #4 I spotted their campsite. I found this little box near their smoldering campfire. The label said "only sold in Washington state" hmmmm? Another 2 minutes down the trail and I found where one of them took a big fat "PUMPKIN" right in the middle of 'PUMPKIN" trail!!!Really? Another 10 minutes or so and I see where the trail begins to turn sharply uphill and I look for my path to the creek. I found one, not sure if it the same others have documented or not. It dropped in right by this nice little small falls. I chose the small site just downstream which was perfect for me. I think there was another spot just a little further upstream. This would be a good spot to setup a base camp for further exploration upstream next time. I saw plenty of fish but most looked like smallmouth. Slept in Sunday and took my time hiking back out enjoying the scenery. Can't wait to multi-day in this area. |
