Hiked down Bright Angel to the two mile switchback and bushwacked, scrambled, and slid our way along a faint cairned path across the bridge to the base of the Battleship. We made our way along the eastside to a large cairn pile and what looked like the base of the class 3 scramble. The route we took up was a tad more difficult and exposed than what we thought it should have been and both agreed it felt much more like class 4. As we get near the top we hit the class 3 trail coming up a bit further from the north and were relieved that we didn't have to descend the way we came up. Enjoyed the impressive views from the Battleship, descended the laughlibly easy way down, and then walked out to the lower northen tip of the 'bow'. And much to our surprise there's a condor perched near the edge. He didn't mind us too much, but he did spread his wings to keep us away. Got some great photos of him/her, Condor #22, that I'll have to post. Hiked back to the bridge and found a much better trail down along the edge and quickly made it back to Bright Angel, and made the relatively short climb up to the rim. |
