| no partners | | Decided to postpone my out of town camping/hiking plans at the last minute so I opted for another close to home quick and easy desert peak bag.
Saddleback Mountain is a part of the Hieroglyphic Mountain range and resides on state trust land so you have to your SLT permit handy if you plan on visiting. You can distinctly see this unique rock formation while driving on Highway 74 near Lake Pleasant and can probably understand why I found interest in it but once you come within a mile of SM's proximity that's when the real appreciation comes out for this little gem!
There are many options up the mountain, I actually chose a route different than my pre-loaded track. I found a nice use trail that for the most part went right up to the summit. Views from the HP were above average for that area and I could see everything from The Hell Canyon Wilderness, Buckhorns, Hiero's, Bradshaws, New River, Mountains, etc...
Stayed at the top for ahwhile landmarking ares of interest for future endeavors as well as replacing the register jar and supplying a new notepad.
I made my way over to the saddle and up to the Southern HP just for poos and giggles. After I was done up there I decided to go down a steep but manageable chute on the NW side of mountain that worked out nicely. The north side of Saddle Mountain is definitely the more picturesque and attractive, it's made up of some very impressive vertical cliff walls for a mountain with a HP of only 2,372.
All in all a great morning on SaddleBackFat Mountain. |
