The trail isn't too hard to follow as there are cairns marking the way but it can get tricky at some points. The trail dips down by the creek and alongside the mountains before coming to an abrupt end after one last huge cairn. I liked this trail but it's definitely advisable to wear pants as there are lots of scratchies along the way. The first few miles are pretty tame but as you go further back in the canyon the trail becomes harder and harder to find. It deadended along a creek and rather than push on to FR201 we turned back after about 4 hrs of hiking (and I am very glad we didn't push forward after what I learned from South Fork). Took about another 4 hours to get back and I was a bit disappointed I couldn't complete the loop I wanted to do (coming back down Gold Ridge) but I still enjoyed this trail a lot. Rougher than Gold Ridge, but definitely not as rough as South Fork. South Fork is definitely not maintained and it was much easier to lose the trail. Deer Creek is not maintained and the trail can be hard to find but we stayed along it until it stopped. Gold Ridge is the best maintained and best to hike (though a lot of uphill). But so much fun to conquer those three trails in my favorite mountains! |
