| no partners | | Had a friend in town and we decide to do something a little different to celebrate Christmas Day. Most of the city was still hunkered down inside after the first snowfall of the year, but we opted to throw on a couple extra layers to see if we could find some waterfalls to play in.
First stop was on the Oregon side of the Gorge at Bride of Hercules. We made fresh tracks through the snow as we scouted out the rappel. Things looked good, so we both put on a couple extra layers and set up the rope. I headed down first, then belayed Mel from the bottom. The falls had a nice low flow that was just perfect- enough to splash in the water and get wet, but not enough that either of us got completely soaked. The worst part was actually scrambling back up the snow and ice covered slopes to get back to the top of the falls and retrieve the rope.
Back in the truck, we made the drive out to Panther Creek for the 2nd drop of the day. Weary of getting the FJ stuck in the snow like I did with my Tahoe several years ago, I was very cautious as the snow got deeper. Fortunately we made it to the parking area without any problems. We scouted out both the top and bottom of the falls, but ultimately decided to skip the rappel. The drop itself is largely free hanging and would have placed us directly below a large cluster of icicles that I didn't think looked very safe. So we packed up and made the long drive back home.
